Khatri wins bronze

KATHMANDU: Phupu Lamu Khatri won bronze medal in JUA Cadet and Junior Judo Championship in Macau on Sunday. Khatri defeated Tee Pan from Chinese Taipei to finish third out of four players in below 63kg weight category, informed Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya. Khatri had earlier won silver medal in the tournament held in Hong Kong.

CCRC, NASA win

KATHMANDU: Capital College And Research Centre (CCRC) and NASA College registered victories in the girls’ section of the second Ganesh Man Singh Memorial Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament here on Monday. In the match played at TIA court, CCRC thrashed TIA 20-3 riding on Priyanka Bhat’s eight points, while Sadhana Ghising’s seven points helped NASA beat Golden Gate 32-19. In other girls’ match, Valley Public edged past Morgan International College 20-17. In boys’ section, CCRC beat TIA 33-25, while Bagmati thumped Liverpool 30-25, SAAN thrashed Canvas 44-19, Times edged past Angel’s Heart 43-40, Morgan routed Trinity 52-25 and Gyan Niketan defeated Bhrihaspati 42-39.

Villa to sign Crespo

BARCELONA: Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Cordoba fullback Jose Angel Crespo, the Spanish club said on Monday. The 28-year-old has been in a contractual dispute with the Andalusian side following their relegation from La Liga at the end of last season and has been looking for a move away. “Cordoba and Aston Villa have reached an agreement for the transfer of Jose Angel Crespo to the English club,” Cordoba announced on their Twitter page. “The defender...will travel to England today for a medical ahead of the signing.” Crespo came through the Sevilla youth academy but was unable to establish himself in the first team. He moved to Racing Santander and then played for Padova in Italy before joining Cordoba last season.

NY City beat Orlando

NEW YORK: David Villa scored twice to help ensure new teammate Andrea Pirlo launched his Major League Soccer career in style with New York City FC's 5-3 victory over Orlando. Pirlo, a 36-year-old World Cup-winning midfielder who enjoyed star turns at AC Milan -- where he won two Champions League titles and for the past four seasons at Juventus where he won four Serie A crowns -- was the center of attention in the match at Yankee Stadium between the two MLS expansion clubs. Chants of "We want Pirlo!" were answered in the 57th minute, when the Italian entered the game to a standing ovation from the crowd of 32,041. He spoke briefly to Kaka then settled in quickly.

Thiem clinches crown

UMAG: Austria’s Dominic Thiem won his second career title on Sunday when he defeated Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-1 in a Croatia Open final watched by world No 1 Novak Djokovic. The 21-year-old Thiem prevailed in 62 minutes to add the Umag crown to his maiden title from Nice on the eve of the French Open in May. Thiem had eliminated top seed Gael Monfils in the semi-finals and carried over that form into the final against Sousa who he has now defeated three times in as many meetings.
