KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 17
South Korea's Ambassador to Nepal, Park Tae-young, attended the opening ceremony of the 4th Mt Everest International Taekwondo Championships 2026 (WT G-1) in Kathmandu on Sunday, as more than 1,200 athletes from 23 countries gathered for the five-day tournament.
The championship, being held from 16 to 20 February at the covered hall of Tripureshwar Rangasala, has drawn competitors in senior and junior divisions, including Poomsae and Kyorugi categories. Participating nations include India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Australia, among others.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Ambassador Park described the championship as a symbol of international friendship and sporting excellence. He said taekwondo, Korea's traditional martial art that has evolved into a global sport, is rooted in discipline and unity. He added that the sport promotes respect and patience worldwide while strengthening bilateral sports and cultural ties.
Organisers said the event includes 100 senior Poomsae athletes, 247 senior Kyorugi athletes, 653 junior Kyorugi athletes and 200 junior Poomsae competitors.
