Lanka crush Bangladesh

Colombo, July 20:

Fast bowler Dilhara Fernando’s career-best 4-24 guided Sri Lanka to a 70-run win in the first one-dayers against Bangladesh on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Bangladesh restricted Sri Lanka to 234 runs after sent into the bat first in their allotted 50 overs. Chamara Silva and Upul Tharanga scored half-centuries, but the visitors snapped up wickets at crucial times and never allowed the batsmen to dominate.

The achievable total gave the visitors a good chance to win. But Sri Lanka’s bowlers proved too much for the visitors as they crumbled to be all out for 164 runs in 40.3 overs.

Openers Shahriar Nafees and Tamim Iqbal showed determination with a 45-run partnership for the first wicket before Fernando struck to have Iqbal (11) caught at first slip and in the same over trapped Tushar Imran leg before wicket without scoring.

That double strike precipitated a collapse that saw Bangladesh lose five wickets for just 11 runs in less than five overs. Mushfiqur Rahim (28) and Farhad Reza (28) played some aggressive strokes during a 42-run partnership for the seventh wicket and tailender Abdur Razzak struck three sixes as in his unbeaten 28 runs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka struggled after Syed Rasel dismissed Jayasuriya. Jayasuirya’s opening partner Tharanga was dropped by wicketkeeper Rahim while yet to score, and went on to make 57.

Sangakkara (16) and Jayawardene (2) were also dropped, but the pair failed to capitalise on their second chances. Silva top scored with 65 that included eight fours and a six. The second match will be played at R Premadasa Stadium Colombo on Monday.
