A three-member Nepali team on Thursday left for Uzbekistan to take part in the Asian Weightlifting Championship slated for April 16-25 in Tashkent. Sanju Chaudhary will participate in the 59kg weight category and Kamala Shrestha will compete in 63kg section in the 30th edition of the women's championship, which also serves as the selection for Tokyo Olympic Games. Coach Sanjay Maharjan accompanied the lifters to Tashkent. Chaudhary became the first-ever Nepali woman lifter to win gold medal in the 13th South Asian Games held on home soil in December 2019. Chaudhary and Shrestha have been training under the Olympic Scholarship for the Tokyo Games.

Nepal is not taking part in the 49th edition of men's event. The two lifters will undergo 26-day training in Uzbekistan before taking part in the championship, informed Nepal Weightlifting Association President Ram Shrestha. Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Vice-president and Executive Director Chaturananda Rajvaidhya, General Secretary Nilendra Raj Shrestha and NWA President Ram Shrestha bade farewell to the team.
