Lifters to get special training in Patiala

Kathmandu, July 26:
Seven national women weightlifters are leaving for Patiala, India to take part in the special training at the Prime Sports Institute (Netaji Subash Institute of Sports) from August 1-31, thanks to India’s Consullor General C Gururaj Rao, who inititated for the special training free of cost. Neeta Thapa, who holds the national record of 118kg in upto 48kg section, Jhanta Katuwal with a national record of 127.5kg in the upto 58kg, Raj Laxmi Thapa, who has a national record of 117kg in the upto 63kg, Tara Pun, who holds the record of 130kg in the upto 75kg section and Uttam Khatri — all from Nepal Police — and Devi Chaudhari of Saptari and Neeti Thapa of Parsa, who has a record of 125kg in the upto 53kg section to her credit, are leaving for India via Raxaul on Wednesday along with National Sports Council’s assistant coach Jeevan Gautam for the training.
NSC member secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh bade farewell to the team at a function today.
According to the Nepal Weight Lifting Association officials, the training would help the athletes to maintain their standard. President of NWLA Gobardhan Nath Sharma and general secretary Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta (Mithu) spoke on the occasion.
Brihaspati win
LALITPUR: Yog Bahadur Thapa top-scored with 30 points but could not save Himalayan School from going down 39-70 to Brihaspati Vidya Sadan in the boys’ section match at the Campion Inter-school Basketball Tournament. Aseem Shrestha netted 22 points for the winners. In other matches, Souerey netted 12 points as Wilson Academy beat Sagarmatha 46-23; and John Syanda top-scored with 16 points but could not help LRI from a 41-46 loss to Sambotta School. In girls’ section, Rato Bangala beat Oasis School 25-14 riding on Kashu Dhakwa’s 11 points; and Pema Sherpa netted 15 points in LRI’s 35-10 win over Brihaspati School.

KATHMANDU: Nepal Drinking Water Corporation defeated Nepal Rashtriya Bank 25-9, 26-24 and entered the quarter-finals of the Birthday Cup Inter-corporation Volleyball Tournament, which has been organised by Nepal Electricity Authority to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In other matches, Nepal Electricity Authority (blue) outplayed Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh 25-6, 25-11; and Nepal Telecom beat Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation 25-19, 25-16 and entered last eight.
