Kathmandu: Bijeshwori Secondary School and Adarsha Vidhya Mandir (AVM) School claimed four gold medals each at the third Valleywide Gautam Buddha Memorial Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament here today. Renuka Khatri of Bijeshwori won the Under-16 girls' section gold beating fellow schoolmate Elina Maharjan 12-10, 1-11, 11-3, 11-5 in the final. In the boys' section final, Anish Shrestha of Bijeshwori came from behind to defeat Sonu Gupta of AIMS 6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8. Sunita Lama of Bijeshwori won the Under-14 girls' section title beating fellow schoolmate Norden Tamang 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9. Biplab Adhikari of AVM struggled before registering a 12-14, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9 win over Bibek Shrestha of Bijeshwori in the boys' section final. In the Under-12 girls' final, Sama Shrestha of AVM beat fellow schoolmate Manisha Khadka 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-13, 11-5. Aman Dhamala defeated Prasanna Khadka 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5 in the all-AVM Under-12 boys' section final. On Monday, AVM had beaten Bijeshwori 3-1 in the boys' team event final while Bijeshwori had claimed the girls' team event title with a 3-2 win over Puspasadan. The tournament featured eight categories -- Under-16, U-14, and U-12 boys and girls' individual events and team events. The top two players in all the individual events received Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively while the two third-place players got Rs 500 each. A total of 300 players took part in the three-day tournament organised by National Table Tennis Training Centre. Chief Secretary Bhoj Raj Ghimire gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS

Nabin wins

KATHMANDU: Nabin Jaiswal of Deep Jyoti School accumulated six points to win the Inter-School Chess Championship organised by Russian Centre of Science and Culture here on Wednesday. Nabin earned six points and 27 progressive points to beat his brother Rupesh, who also earned six points with 22 progressive points. Tara Ghale finished third. Shanta Thapa of Deep Joyti and Bijaya Dongol came fourth and fifth respectively. Krishna Dev Choudhary, Suraj Lohani, Sagar KC, Ashwin Sapkota and Ashik Thapa completed the top 10. Director of Russian Center of Science and Culture Dr Vladimir V Novikov gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS

Baniya gets donation

KATHMANDU: Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Centre (JVTC) donated Rs 30,000 for the treatment of Dinesh Baniya, an ailing volleyball player who needs kindey transplantation. The 41-year-old Baniya has been doing dialysis regularly and doctors have advised him for kindey transplantation, which costs around Rs 1.2 million. Baniya was the member of the Nepali team in the sixth and seventh South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in 1991 and 1993. The JVTC handed over the cheque of Rs 30,000 to Nepal National and International Players Association. Also, Bhakta Thapa, Bharat Bahadur Thapa, Dhana Bahadur Thapa, Sobit Prasai, Golchha House, Indrajeet Raj, Niranjan Prasai, Raju Sharma, Krishna Sitaula, Nemraj Timilsina and Sanjay Bhattarai of Biratnagar raised Rs 27,500 for the cause, informed NNIPA General Secretary Deepak Shrestha. — HNS

Dandi-Biyo tourney

KATHMANDU: Nepal International Taekwondo Federation (IFT) and Nepal Paragliding and Hanggliding Association (NPHA) entered the final of the first Panther National Inter-association Tournament here on Wednesday. In the semi-finals, Nepal ITF defeated Cricket Association of Nepal 218-215 and NPHA outplayed Nepal Jitkundo Martial Arts Association 304-242. The third place match and final are slated for Friday. — HNS

Unique in semis

KATHMANDU: Unique beat Sambotta 76-63 and entered the semi-finals of the first Inter-school Boys' Basketball Tournament here on Wednesday. Manish Tamang scored 25 points for the winners. Sambotta also advanced to the last four as the Group B runners up to Unique. In the other match of the tournament organised by Reliance International Academy, Gyan Niketan edged past Pennwood 59-54 riding on Lal Bahadur Limbu's 20 points. — HNS

Sangita wins 1,500m

Kathmandu: Sangita Tiwari of Sudesa High School won the girls' 1,500m gold medal with the timing of six minutes 2.03 seconds at the first President Running Shield Inter-school Tournament today. Muna Bamjan came second in 6:43.04 while Maya Lama finished third in 6:46.01 seconds. In boys' section, Narendra Thapa of Nightingale School finished first n four minutes 38 seconds, ahead of Jeet Budha (4:40) and Shyam Bahaur BK (4:50). In girls' Long Jump, Prabha Rai of Rato Bangala covered 3.46 metres to win gold, while Pallavi Tiwari (3.37m) and Binita Bhattarai (3.33m). In boys' Long Jump, Deepesh Shrestha of Ideal Model jumped 5.08 metres to finish first, ahead of Prakash Shahi of (4.67) and Rikjing Lama (4.62m). In boys' volleyball, Lubhoo beat Adarsha 25-9, 25-21; Nightingale defeated Lubhoo 25-18, 25-23; and Namuna beat Mount Olive 25-23, 25-11 and earned a walk over win from Prabhat. Also, Mahankal received walkover from Manju Shree. In girls' section, Adarsha beat Woods Villa 25-9, 25-12. — HNS
