Thimi, Lalitpur win

POKHARA: Madhyapur Thimi Municipality defeated Pokhara Sub-metropolitan City 2-1 and Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City edged out Dharan 4-3 on penalties to enter the semi-finals of the third Inter-municipality Football Tournament on Monday. Sahukhala brothers Balgopal and Santosh scored for Thimi while Santosh KC converted for Pokhara. In another quarter-final, Ranjit Shrestha wasted a penalty shot in the 51st minute extending the match to penalty shootout. Bhaktapur will meet Prithivi Narayan and Dhankutta face Byas Municipality on Tuesday. — HNS

APF claim team events

BHARATPUR: Armed Police Force (APF) won both men and women’s team events at the 32nd National Badminton Championship on Monday. The APF men’s team defeated Kailali while the women’s team beat Sunsari in final. Likewise, Sumina Shrestha, Neri Thapa, Sujana Shrestha and Sara Devi Tamang advanced to the women’s singles semi-finals while Ram Singh Chaudhary, Bikash Shrestha, Pashupati Paneru and Balram Thapa also made it to the last four in the men’s singles. — HNS

Athletes off to Osaka

KATHMANDU: A three-member athletics team on Monday left for Osaka, Japan to participate in the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships slated for August 21 to September 2. Kanchi Maya Koju will compete in 1,500m while Tikaram Tharu will take part in 100m. Member of the Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) Santosh Shrestha accompanied the two athletes. On Sunday, the NAAA general secretary Ravi Rajkarnikar left for the same event to attend the IAAF World Congress. — HNS

Karatekas leave for KL

KATHMANDU: A 12-member karate team on Monday left for Kuala Lumpur to take part in the eighth Senior Asian Karate-do Championship that begins from Tuesday. The players are Rabindra Dahal (55kg), Binod Maharjan (60kg), Kushal Shrestha (65kg), Dhan Bahadur Lama (70kg), Digardev Bhatta (75kg), Binod Shakya (80kg), Santosh Yakkha (80kg) and Ganga Ram Maharjan (individual kata) in men’s event while Parbati Giri (48kg), Madhu Singh (53kg), Tara Gurung (60kg) and Sulochana Sijakhwa (individual kata) will play in women’s event. — HNS
