Putalibazar triumph

Pokhara: Putalibazar Municipality humiliated Amargadi Municipality 15-0 and Nepalgunj Municipality blanked Triyuga Municipality 4-0 to enter the second round of the third Inter-municipality Football Tournament on Wednesday. Santosh Shrestha alone scored seven goals for Putalibazar and Sabin Gurung joined the party with a hat trick of his own. With seven goals, Santosh became the leading scorer of the tournament. Anil Gurung of Pokhara Sub-metropolitan City is second with six goals. Putalibazar scored five goals in the first half before adding 10 more in the latter half. Shakti Gurung also scored a brace while Sandip Thapa, Rajesh Khand and Milan Gurung added one goal apiece. Earlier in the first match, Arun Lama struck twice and Puspa Rokka and Santosh added one goal each for Nepalgunj. Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City will face Bidur Municipality and Dharan will meet Tansen on Thursday. — HNS

Nepali U-19 team lose

KATHMANDU: Nepali -19 cricket team lost its second consecutive practice match in Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Western Province North cricket team beat the visitors by 41 runs. Put into bat first by Nepal, the home team accumulated 236-8 in 50 overs with Asan Pritanjana (65), Madhava Barnapura (55) and Thisara Parera (55) all scoring half centuries. Amrit Bhattarai and Rahul Bishwokarma claimed two wickets each for Nepal. In reply, Nepal were bowled out for 195 runs in 47 overs. Thisara took six and Dilsan Munawira bagged two wickets for the hosts. The Nepali team is in Sri Lanka for three practice matches before leaving for Malaysia to participate in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup slated for August 19-28. — HNS

Rating chess tournament

LALITPUR: Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, who beat Indian International Master (IM) Atanu Lahari on Tuesday, lost to another Indian IM Roktim Bandhopadhyaya in the fifth round of the Indo-Nepal Friendly Rating Chess tournament on Wednesday. Lahari beat Lava Kumar Shrestha while IM Saptarishi and Shanker Roy ended their game in a draw. After completion of the fifth round, Roktim, Saptarishi and Bipul Subhasi are tied for the lead with 4.5 points. Lahari, Sujendra, Surbir Lama, Uttam Thapa, Manish and Bijay are joint second with 4 points each while Sitaram Agrawal, Rajendra Shrestha, Mahesh Thapa, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Prachanda Malakar, Laxminath Kandel, Dipendra Karmacharya, Rajan Shrestha and Shanker Majumdar were next with 3.5 points each. — HNS

Valley Public win

KATHMANDU: Valley Public won the first Golden Peak Inter-school Junior Basketball Tournament here on Wednesday. Biraj Rana scored 21 points in Valley Public’s 44-37 win over Gillette in final. Khem Bun also netted 20 for Gillette. Biraj was also adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament participated by 16 schools. Kapil Bum of Gillette became the leading scorer with 111 points. In the third-place decider, Trungram International Academy beat Greenland 37-25. Vice-president of Nepal Basketball Academy Narendra Thapa and principal of the Golden Peak Chhatra Mani Rai among others gave away the prizes to the winners. — HNS

LRI, Lincoln in quarters

KATHMANDU: Learning Realm International (LRI) defeated Mangal Higher Secondary School 69-41 and Lincoln outscored Nepal Basketball Academy 95-48 to secure the quarter-final berths of the Mohan Pradhan Memorial U-19 Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Dipesh Joshi scored 26 in LRI win and Sharad Robertson netted 29 points in Lincoln’s victory. Also advancing in the last eight were Gyanodaya and Ace Institute. Binod Maharjan contributed 25 points as Gyanodaya hammered Rupy’s International 102-30 while Suyog Khadka scored a match-winning 30 points as Ace sneaked past Orient 56-54. — HNS
