Sports Council to demand Rs 640m

KATHMANDU: The board meeting of the National Sports Council (NSC) on Tuesday decided to

demand Rs 640 million from the government for infrastructure development. “The board decided to demand the amount to build a standard stadium in Kathmandu, two multipurpose covered halls each in the five development regions, support in building National Cricket Academy in Mulpani, and properly manage the already existing infrastructure around the country,” said the NSC member secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha. The meeting, which was chaired by the NSC president and Minister for Education and Sports Pradeep Nepal, also formed various suggestion committees — to manage martial arts, to associate medal-winning players with their relative sports, to explore ways of raising NSC’s internal fund among others. — HNS

Bank volleyball

KATHMANDU: Machhapuchhre Bank and Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) advanced to the semi-finals of the Inter-bank Volleyball Tournament here on Tuesday. Machhapuchhre defeated Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) 25-21, 14-25, 25-5, 25-20 and ADB beat Nepal Bangladesh Bank 25-12, 25-8, 25-9 in quarter-finals. RBB’s place in the semi-final is, however, not secured following a protest against Machhapuchhre for fielding outsiders in the team. The decision on the protest will be taken on Wednesday, said the organisers Nepal Rastra Bank. — HNS

In other matches at the same venue, Birendra Sainik Mahavidhyalaya blanked Shrine Academy 3-0, Gyanmala beat Bhanubhakta Memorial 2-0 and Siddhi Ganesh thrashed AGM School 9-0. At ANFA Complex, Satdobato, Deep Jyoti beat Nepal Rastriya Secondary School 5-1, Brighter Horizon edged out Manaslu 2-1, Annapurna outplayed Vision Academy 5-1 and Nightingale defeated Shree Padma School 4-0. — HNS

Kathmandu win

KATHMANDU: A late fightback by Abhay Rana and Raju Basnyat helped Kathmandu district beat Lalitpur district by one wicket in the Shikhar Regional (Kathmandu) Cricket Tournament on Tuesday. Sanjay Shrestha (50) and Prashanna Shakya (53) scored half centuries as Lalitpur accumulated 171 before being all out in the 48.3 overs. Sharad Vesawkar claimed four wickets for Kathmandu. In reply, Kathmandu chased the total in 37.4 overs losing nine wickets. Batting at No 8, Abhay Rana contributed match-winning 44-ball 31 while No 10 batsman Basnyat, who claimed took two wickets earlier, struck unbeaten 26 runs. Birendra Shah took three wickets for Lalitpur. — HNS

KATHMANDU: The Central High School Committee of Nepal Shito-ryu Karate Association is organising the 13th International High School Karate and Kickboxing Championship from May 24-27 in Kathmandu. Players from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bhutan will compete in the tournament, said the organisers in a release here on Tuesday. — HNS

Akhil Cup football

KATHMANDU: The Bagmati Zone Co-ordination Committee of the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) is organising the Akhil Cup Valleywide Inter-college Football Tournament in Kathmandu from May 24. The inaugural and the final matches will be held at the Dasharath Stadium while all the other matches will be played at ANFA Technical Centre in Chyasal, said the organisers at a press meet on Tuesday. In all, 39 teams are taking part in the knock-out tournament. The top three winners will get Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. — HNS
