Thapa advances

Kathmandu: Kamal Thapa advanced to the quarter-finals in the above 45 section of the Nepal Open Senior Veterans’ Tennis Tournament after his opponent Shyam Thapa retired due to injury in the second set. Kamal Thapa won the first set 6-0 and was leading the second 2-0 when the football coach left the match. In other pre-quarters, Manoj Rana beat Ramji Thapa 6-0, 6-4; Karma Gurung beat Bidur Bista 6-1, 6-4; Prithvi Thakali beat LP Gurung 6-0, 6-0; Subarna Dhakwa beat Ishwor Rai 6-0, 6-3; Gyanendra Tamrakar beat Bikash Rana 6-1, 6-4. Deepak Shrestha and Chyamba Dhondup also advanced after earning walkovers. In above 35 section quarter-finals, Krishna Ghale beat Amrit Kansakar 6-2, 6-1; Rajesh Chhetri beat Dharma Shahi 6-3, 6-1; Chandra Shahi beat Raju Rai 6-1, 6-2; and Binod Kayastha downed Raju Shrestha 7-5, 6-4.

JVTC in semis

KATHMANDU: Sarvottam Tank defeated Madan Smarak School 25-1, 25-6, 25-11; and Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Centre (JVTC) beat Anal Jyoti ‘B’ 25-6, 25-6, 25-14 to enter the women’s semi-finals of the Birthday Cup Open Volleyball Tournament. In men’s quarters, Tribhuvan Club defeated JVTC 25-12, 25-17, 25-18; Kaski beat Kavre 25-14, 25-13, 25-17; Mahendra Police Club beat Legend Cargo 25-11, 25-16, 25-22; Gyanendra APF beat Drishti Club 25-18, 25-18, 25-16.

Sarkar to depart

KATHMANDU: Senior cricket umpire Satyajeet Sarkar is going to Malaysia on Wednesday to take part at the Umpires’ Meeting on August 4, and also officiate the ACC U-17 Asia Cup matches, slated for August 4-13. He will officiate two matches — UAE vs Mal-aysia on August 5 and UAE vs Thailand on August 6.
