Makkhan Club lead

LALITPUR: Makhan Club topped the leaderboard with eight points after winning both their matches of the first National Club Team Rating Chess Championship on Friday. Makkhan defeated hosts Himalayan Sherpa Club ‘A’ in the third round and Kantipur Chess Club in the fourth with an identical margin 2.5-1.5. Kantipur, who earlier saw off Machhindra 2.5-1.5 in the third round hold the second position along with Himalayan Sherpa ‘B’, Patan Jaycees and Machhindra Club, who all have six points. Machhindra later managed 2.5-1.5 over Friends and Nations Chess Club. Himalayan Sherpa ‘B’ defeated Kathmandu Chess Club in the third round and lost to Patan Jaycees in the second. Patan Jaycees lost to Himalayan Sherpa ‘A’ in the third round. — HNS

White House, GAA win

KATHMANDU: Himalayan White House International College and hosts Godavari Alumni Association (GAA) opened the Fed-Ex fifth Fr Watrin Women’s Basketball Tournament here on Friday. Roshin Gurung contributed eight points as White House edged past Snow Leopards 25-20 while GAA saw off Golden Gate International College 49-37 riding on 18 points from Julia Opitz. Maya Syangten chipped in with 14 points for Golden Gate. — HNS

NPC start with victory

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Club (NPC) and Employment Creation Services (ECS) recorded wins on the opening day of the Super League stage of the National Men’s Volleyball League Championship here on Friday. The NPC eased past People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Club 25-11, 25-8, 25-15 while ECS rallied from two sets deficit to overcome Western Region 17-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 19-17. — HNS

Bodybuilding C’ship

KATHMANDU: Organisers Kaski District Association said that the preparation of the third Mr Himalaya Bodybuilding Championship is in final stages. Kaski, coordination with Nepal Bodybuilding and Fitness Association, is organising the annual championships in Pokhara on September 15-16. The event features competition in eight categories - 55kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg, above-80kg and the overall champion. Top three bodybuilder in the overall championship will receive Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively while others finishing atop seventh position will also get Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Winner of each of the seven weight category will qualify for the overall championship. — HNS

Shekhar enter final

KATHMANDU: Shekhar Thapaliya and Yuddha Lama set up men’s open karate championship clash during the fifth Bagmati Zonal Karate and Kickboxing Tournament on Friday. Shekhar beat Harka Rai and Yuddha saw off Upendra Sharma in the semi-finals. Entering the women’s 50kg final were Melina Adhikari and Samjhana Ghising. Through to the semi-finals in the girls’ 20kg section were Sabita Rai, Anusha Gurung, Anisha Tamang and Usha Saru. Robin Shrestha, Kiran Gurung, Mandip Raut and Rakesh Thapa also made it to the boys’ 20kg semi-finals. Likewise, Gautam Shrestha, Arun Dangol, Arjan Regmi and Saroj Gurung entered the boys’ 25kg category semi-finals. — HNS

KATHMANDU: The Soccer Group is organising the Nature Valley Five-A-Side Football Tournament on Saturday. In all 17 teams will compete for the championship, said the organiser here at a press meet on Friday. Parasar, Kapil in final

KATHMANDU: The pair of Parasar Jung Pande and Kapil Shahi made it to the final of the third Ramailo Doubles Badminton Tournament on Friday. Parasar and Kapil advanced after Ranjit Ghatani and Man Mohan KC retired while trailing 31-27. The winners will meet Avimanyu KC and Prakash Karki in final. Avimanyu and Prakash beat Kiroj Man Singh Basnet and Bijay Shrestha 35-17. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Sundar Lama and Ram Lama entered the 60kg quarter-finals of the first Nationwide Men’s Open Full-contact Kyukusin Karate on Friday. Joining them in the quarter-finals were Madhav KC, Raju Magar, Binod Rana, Nagendra Singh, Santosh Kumar Lama and Chandra Bahadur Thapa. Making it to the 50-60kg quarter-finals were Dev Lama, Jivan Khati, Manish Sunuwar, Rajan Shrestha, Narayan Acharya, Dil Bahadur Lama, Sandeep Patel and Rajesh Lama. Nasir Memorial karate

KATHMANDU: Dojan Gurung and Rupmila Tamang entered the women’s 45kg final of the Nasir Khan Memorial Karate Tournament here on Friday. Dojan beat Nirmala Lama and Rupmila dispatched Sujita Nagarkoti in the semi-finals. Manju Lama beat Yasodha Tamang in the women’s 40kg to enter the final of the tournament organised by Kumari-Do of Japan Goju-ryu Karate Do Kenwakai Association, Nepal. Also through to
