Sharma qualifies

KATHMANDU: Bhagwati Prasad Sharma on Monday won the Selection Chess Tournament. Avinaya Subedi, Niranjan Prajapati and Hari Chandra Chaulagain have also qualified along with Sharma for the unrated category of the International Chess Tournament slated for Mumbai from May 10-20. Qualified for the rated section were reigning Nepal champion Keshav Shrestha, Krishna Thapa, Surbir Lama, Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Prem Krishna Maharjan. Member secretary of the National Sports Council Jeevan Ram Shrestha presented the certificates to the winners. — HNS

Gyanu Baba on top

KATHMANDU: Gyanu Baba finished on top of the standing after the completion of the first round of the Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women’s Volleyball League here on Monday. Gyanu Baba advanced to the next round with 27 points, two more than Fishtail Academy. Gyanu Baba overcame Fishtail 18-25, 25-11, 25-15, 22-25, 15-12 in a decider. Also, Chhantyal Sports Team beat New Diamond 25-12, 25-19, 25-11, Fishtail defeated Bright Future 25-13, 25-13, 25-14 and Gyanu Baba edged past Tops School 25-15, 25-22, 25-13. Also entering the second round were Tops, Bright Future, New Diamond, Chhantyal Sports Team and Nepal Police Club. — HNS

CAN-XI beat SPG

LALITPUR: CAN-XI beat Sports Promotion Group (SPG) of Bangalore by 103 runs in a friendly cricket match here at the Pulchowk Engineering grounds on Monday. Batting first, CAN were all out for 223 runs in 34.3 overs before restricting the visitors for 120 runs in 28 overs. Man of the match Ram Pradhan scored 57 off 44 balls and Shuvankar Singh remained unbeaten on 49 off 54 balls. Achhapa NK took four and Akshay Chopra claimed two for the SPG. In reply, Ashish Ramaswamy fought a lonely battle with 76-ball 53 for SPG. Wanel Lama and Sujeen Adhikari claimed three wickets each while Ram Pradhan and Suman Kaji Sthapit took one apiece for CAN-XI. — HNS
