Singapore crush Nepal

KATHMANDU: Nepali teams continued with their disappointing run at the Asian Team Chess Championship in Kolkata on Wednesday. The men’s team from Makhan Chess Club comprising of Raj Kishore Mahato, Punya Man Karmacharya, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Sujendra Prasad Shrestha lost 4-0 to Singapore. Singapore team had a Grand Master and two FIDE Masters. The men’s team had also lost 4-0 against Indonesia on Tuesday. The women’s team of Monalisha Khamboo, Namrata Chudal, Asmita Adhikari and Tara Ghale also went down 4-0 to Singapore. Reserve player Ghale had replaced Bisakha Jaiswal.

Shankar Dev, Sann win

LALITPUR: Shankar Dev, Sann International College and Nepal Rastriya Higher Secondary School recorded wins in the Akhil Cup Inter-college Football Tournament here on Wednesday. Bikash Sapkota scored in the 10th minute as Shankar Dev eased past Tri Chandra College 1-0. Sann International defeated Nobel Academy 3-2 in the tie breakers after a 1-1 stalemate. Yalai Thapa, Dinesh Pujara and Nitesh Karki converted the spot kicks for Sann while Bipin Adhikari and Pradeep Rawal scored for Nobel in the tie-breakers. Earlier, Sann took a 12-minute lead from Jyoti Shrestha before Jitendra Maharjan equalised for Nobel in the 18th minute. Dev Chandra Thapa scored the decider in the 61st minute as Nepal Rastriya beat Little Angels School 1-0.

Suraj, Pranav enter final

LALITPUR: Suraj Kumar Tamang and Pranav Khanal reached the Under-9 boys’ singles final of the eighth Jayakar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament here on Wednesday. Suraj defeated Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya 10-3, 10-8 in the first semi-final while Pranav saw off Hridayap Singh 10-6, 10-6. In the U-14 boys’ singles matches, Naresh Shrestha defeated Anukul Shrestha 8-1, Kumar Yadav crushed Prakash Prasad 8-0 and Abhash Malla beat Aakash Rokka 8-5 to enter second round. Abhi Shankar Timsina, Kelvin Gurung, Robin Rana, Sandesh Singh Rathod, Abisash Khatri, David Tako, Prakash Sharma, Abhishek Bastola, Abhaya Gauchan and Niraj Wagle also advanced to the second round. Chiranjibi Lama, Suman GC, Dikshyanta Gurung, Anubhav Shrestha, Karan Chaudhari, Niraj Wagle, Milan Roka, Achal Thapa and Sandesh Singh Rathod made it to the U-16 boy’s singles second round.

Double delight for Rara Hill

KATHMANDU: Hosts Rara Hill School registered double win at the first RAA Inter-school Basketball Tournament here on Wednesday. Rara Hill ‘A’ defeated Creative 25-10 in the girls section while their ‘B’ team outplayed Bagh Bhairab 35-22 in the boys event riding on 16 points from Bijen Maharjan. Pushpa Sadan defeated Creative 27-7 and Panga defeated Learning Realms International ‘B’ 42-14 in other boys’ section matches. A total of 20 teams — 11 in boys and nine in girls section — are participating in the tournament organised by Rara Hill Alumni Association.

White House triumph

KATHMANDU: Mrinalini contributed 10 points as White House defeated ACE College 27-12 in the girls’ section of the Professional Gyan Carnival Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. With the result, ACE is out of the competition. In the boys’ section, Reliance overcame ACE 56-45 with Rohit Karki netting 24 points for the winning team. The match between Gyanodaya and Einstein was postponed for Thursday, informed the organisers.

Judokas off to Bhopal

KATHMANDU: A 10-member Nepali judo team on Wednesday left for Bhopal for a one month training at the Sports Authority of India as part of their preparation for the 11th South Asian Games. Among the players are Parshu Ram Chaudhary (below 60kg), Ramesh Magar (below 66kg), Dipak Shrestha (below 73kg), Kalu Man Tamang (below 100kg), Rajan Joshi (above 100kg), Debu Thapa (women’s below 63kg) and Radha Devi Rai. Dipak, Debu and Radha Devi are the only SA Games experienced players in the Nepali team. Debu won silver and Radha took bronze in the 10th SAF Games in Sri Lanka. Coaches Dal Bahadur Gurung and Surya Narayan along with manager Dharma Ratna Pakshe accompanied the team. Youth and Sports Minister Ganesh Tiwari Nepali, National Sports Council vice-president Pitambar Timsina bade farewell to the team.

Shrestha appointed in JoA

KATHMANDU: Nepal Archery Association (NAA) President Laxman Kumar Shrestha has been appointed as a member of the Jury of Appeal (JoA) for the 11th South Asian Games slated for January 29 to February 9 in Dhaka next year. Shrestha was appointed for the post following a recommendation from Olympic Council of South Asian Games, informed Shrestha.
