Newton triumph
KATHMANDU: Hosts Newton won the boys’ and New Diamond claimed the girls championship of the second Newton Valleywide Inter-school Volleyball Tournament here on Tuesday. Newton saw off Nightingale 25-18, 25-21, 25-15. Binu Bhujel of Newton was declared the player of the tournament and his teammate Mangal Rasaili was adjudged the best spiker. Likewise, Umesh Chhantyal of Kamana, Kusum Pariyar of Newton and Amar Mahato of Nightingale were named best lifter, blocker and server respectively. In the girls’ final, New Diamond beat Gyan Sudha 25-4, 24-12, 25-10. Ramila Tandukar of the winning team won the best player award. Likewise, Pravisha Rai, Shova Gauchan and Bina Moktan were adjudged the best spiker, blocker and server respectively. National women volleyball player and Pulsar Popular Player of the Year award winner Manju Gurung was also feted on the occasion.
Dhulikhel beat Baylor
KAVRE: Dhulikhel and Emmanuel English School won their respective matches of the 18th Inter-school IGP Running Shield Football Tournament on Monday. Dhulikhel defeated Baylor International School 1-0 on a 57th minute goal from Sajan Byanju. Emanuel saw off Learning Realms International 1-0 on an 18th minute goal from Muna Thami. In another match, hosts Nepal Police Higher Secondary School (NPS) ‘A’ held Siddhartha Vanasthali Institute (SVI) 1-1. Sunil Bhandari scored in the 48th minute for the SVI and Biplav Subba found the equaliser 18 minutes later for the hosts.
Machhapuchhre, LA win
LALITPUR: Machhapuchhre, Little Angels (LA) School and Kathmandu University (KU) School won their respective matches of the fourth Fr Moran Memorial Inter-school Invitational Football Tournament here on Tuesday. Machhapuchhre defeated Green Lawn School 2-1. Sandeep Tamang and Diwas Khatri scored for Machhapuchhre while Bishwas Baral replied for Green Lawn. Atit Raj Kayastha and Prashant Awasthi completed a hat-trick each to give LA a crushing 6-0 win over Chelsea International Academy. KU saw off hosts St Xavier’s School of Godavari 1-0 with Sankalpa Humagain scoring the decider. In another match, St Xavier’s School of Jawalakhel held Pushpanjali to a goalless draw.
NIMS champions
KATHMANDU: Niten Memorial School (NIMS), Daffodil and hosts Unique won the fifth Unique Inter-school Valleywide Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. Bina Nakarmi netted 23 points as NIMS laboured to a 23-22 win over Kantipur to claim the senior girls’ trophy. Sanchita Gurung of Kantipur bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. In the junior boys’ final, Daffodil edged past Unique 33-30. Chhiring Jangbu Lama won the MVP honour. Likewise, Unique ‘A’ overcame their second string Team ‘B’ 31-26 in the senior boys three-on-three basketball. Bikash also earned the MVP award.
RSFN hands memo
KATHMANDU: The Republican Sports Federation of Nepal (RSFN) submitted a 15-point memorandum to the Youth and Sports Minister Ganesh Nepali that includes the formation of an all-party sports commission. The other demands include the democratisation of sports associations affiliated to the National Sports Council, 50 per cent transportation and medical concession for dynamic and talented players, modernisation of infrastructure, life insurance for the national and international players and primary place for sports in the new constitution.
NIMS open with victory
KATHMANDU: Hosts Niten Memorial School (NIMS) and Daffodil started with wins on the inaugural day of the first Niten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. In the girls section, NIMS defeated Excelsior 22-10 and Daffodil edged past Reliance 18-2. Mt Kailash and NIMS ‘B’ won the boys’ section match. Mt Kailash thrashed Excelsior 47-30 riding on 20 points from Nima Tashi while Nima Tamang scored 15 points as NIMS overcame Reliance 42-35.
