Madrid crush Villarreal

Madrid, September 3:

Defending champion Real Madrid trounced Villarreal 5-0 on Sunday to maintain its perfect start to the season. Wesley Sneijder scored twice and Raul Gonzalez, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez added a goal apiece to lift Madrid to six points from two games.

Earlier, FC Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1. Barcelona have four points, level with Mallorca, Murcia and Valladolid. Ronaldinho, captaining Barcelona in the absence of Carles Puyol, scored from a ninth-minute free kick and converted a 36th-minute penalty. Yaya Toure scored the team’s third.

In other matches, it was: Atletico Madrid 1, Mallorca 1; Almeria 1, Valencia 2; Real Betis 2, Espanyol 2; Valladolid 2, Deportivo La Coruna 2; and Getafe 1, Recreativo Huelva 1.

Atletico managed a draw. Mallorca striker Daniel Guiza scored in the 19th minute, with Atletico defender Mariano Pernia levelling in the 78th.

Emiliano Moretti’s 80th-minute goal gained Valencia its first points of the season over promoted Almeria. Valencia’s Fernando Morientes scored from the edge of the area in the 47th, with Alvaro Negredo replying for Almeria 16 minutes later.

Betis rallied late to draw with Espanyol after goals by Fernando Fernandez in the 84th and Rafel Sobis in the 85th. Espanyol netted through Luis Garcia in the 33rd and 42nd.

Valladolid’s Jose Maria Garcia Calvo gave the lead in the 45th, with Sebastian Taborda equalising for Deportivo in the 54th. Sisi Gonzalez restored Valladolid’s lead in the 72nd, with Ivan “Riki” Sanchez levelling in the 78th.

Recreativo striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored in the 84th, with Manu Del Moral levelling in injury time.
