Madrid, January 20:

Real Madrid was eliminated from the Copa del Rey on away goals after a 1-1 home draw against second-division Valladolid. Midfielder Xavi More scored the deciding goal in the 77th minute to send Valladolid into the quarter-finals of Spain’s knock-out competition. Madrid, which suffered its first disappointment under coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, took the lead through Michael Owen in the 66th minute.

The two teams drew 0-0 in the first leg last week. Madrid has not won the Copa del Rey in 12 years. In other matches, Athletic Bilbao and Numancia both overcame deficits against lower league rivals to reach the last eight. Striker Fernando Llorente scored a hat trick of headers to help Bilbao to a 6-0 victory over third-division Lanzarote and a 7-2 aggregate win.

Numancia eliminated second-division Elche 5-3 on penalties after leveling the aggregate scores with a 1-0 victory after extra time.

In the only match between two top-flight sides, Osasuna advanced 4-3 on aggregate despite losing to Getafe 3-2. Also, Real Betis played out a 0-0 home draw with third-division Mirandes to go through 3-1 on aggregate.

FA Cup

EXETER:

Goals by Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney finally shook off pesky Exeter City in a 2-0 victory for shaky Manchester United on Wednesday as the defending champion reached the FA Cup fourth round after a thrilling replay. Ronaldo struck in the ninth minute and Rooney three minutes from the end at Exeter’s St. James’ Park although the Conference team - 98 places below United in English soccer’s hierarchy - gave Alex Ferguson more frights after their 0-0 tie at Old Trafford 10 days ago.

United’s lead looked a slender one as Exeter created several chances to level before its 9,000 fans but it Ferguson’s men who now host Middlesbrough in round four.
