Magar adds another silver in wushu

Shillong, February 9

Wushuka Bishow Budha Magar added another silver medal in Nepal’s kitty when he finished second in Taolu’s Gunshu All-round event here at the Assam Rifle Sports Complex today.

Magar, who had scored 8.75 points in the first round, added 9.10 to win silver with a total score of 17.85 points. India’s Chirag Sharma finished first, while Pakistan’s Muhammad Waleed Ajmal came third in the event.

Magar said he was happy to win silver for the country but not satisfied with the judges’ decision. “I don’t know how they judged but I had given my best shot and that was enough to win gold medal,” said Magar. “I had prepared well for the SA Games and performed accordingly.”

Magar said his next target is to perform better in the Asian Championship in September. “I want to do well in the Asian Championship but the way we train is not enough. We were not even provided with the kits on time and we also did not have enough time to train this time around. I want to urge the authorities to provide us with proper training and gears for the Championship,” he added.

Coach Prakash Maharjan also complained about judges’ decisions. “The players have given their best but we are not getting gold medals. We had a target of winning at least three gold medals in Taolu but I am clueless what is going on here,” Maharjan said.

In other events of Taolu, Sabita Rai and Hari Prasad Gole finished their first rounds today and both are at the second position. Rai scored 9.15 points in women’s Taijiquan to remain marginally behind India’s L Sanatombi Chanu (9.21), while Komal Emmanuel of Pakistan is a distant third at 7.10. Likewise, Gole scored 8.61 points in men’s Taijiquan. India’s M Gyandash Singh is at the top with 9.05 points, while Bangladesh’s Md Rahmotullah Kisor is third at 8.35 points.

Magar’s silver medal is Nepal’s fourth in wushu and sixth overall in the ongoing SA Games. Wushukas Bijay Sinjali and Sushmita Tamang won two silvers on Sunday before Yubaraj Thapa added another on Monday. So far, Nepal has just one gold in the medal tally and that came from wushuka Nima Gharti Magar.

Nepal is assured of at least four more silvers as three women sanshou players Jharna Gurung, Juni Rai and Bindu Pun Magar have entered the final along with Rajesh Chaudhary. Also, Saroj Pun finished third in the 65kg weight category after he lost his semi-final bout against Sheikb Haider of Afghanistan. The finals are slated for Wednesday.
