Manang put brakes on Army’s title race
Kathmandu, February 16:
Felix Chimaokwu scored twice in his second game to give Manang Marsyngdi a 2-0 win over Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) in the Martyrs’ Memorial San Miguel ‘A’ Division League here at Dasharath Stadiun today.
In the other match, Brigade Boys Club came back from a goal deficit to beat Friends Club 4-1 to climb three spot up to ninth position with one more game to play.
With just one match remaining, the Armymen (60) are now out of the title race. MMC climbed up to top the standings with 62 points and has two matches to play, while defending champion Nabil Three Star (61) has three and Mahendra Police Club (59) has two matches on hand.
On Thursday, MMC ressurected itself in time earning vital three points in what turned out to be MMC dominated game. Chimaokwu gave MMC the lead just four minutes into the game as he powered in a perfect goal following TAC defender Raju Tamang’s error.
Chimaokwu came up with even better strike to seal his team’s victory six minutes after the break. Even TAC full-length diving TAC goalie Chaudhary could not save the powerful strike from just outside the penalty box.
MMC came close in the 40th minute but TAC goalkeeper Chaudhary made a stunning save denying Nurudeen Olawale Salau’s header. MMC coach Chhiring Lopsang Gurung said that his team did not perform up to their potential. “We earned three points, that is more important,” Gurung said, adding that the win would motivate his team to perform better in next matches.
TAC coach Kishor KC said that Raju Tamang’s defensive error, that led to concede a goal, proved fatal for them. “We did have opportunities to score but the lack of quality strikers let us down.”
Earlier, stand-in skipper Chandra Tamang put Friends’ ahead in the seventh minute but BBC bounced back strongly in the second half scoring four goals. In the 53rd minute, Aakash Chhantyal levelled the scores through a header off Raju Rai’s corner.
Obagbimiro Junior put BBC ahead in the 66th mintue with a 20-yard spectacular goal. Raju Rai added another in the 85th minute before Junior sealed the victory in the second-half injury time.
