Mathaeus rejects offer

BERLIN: Ex-Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus on Wednesday rejected an offer to coach Argentinian side Racing Club de Avellaneda. "After a lot of consideration, I must unfortunately reject the offer from Racing -- the whole idea does not really fit," the 48-year-old told the Cologne Express. Matthaeus, who lifted the 1990 World Cup with Germany and won 150 caps for his country, was supposed to be on the bench with the club from the Buenos Aires's suburbs for Saturday's game against Tucuman. Matthaeus' decision leaves Racing red-faced as the Argentinian club announced the German was their new coach last weekend.
