Mauresmo, Davenport in quarter-final

Beijing, September 21:

Lindsay Davenport set up a quarter-final clash with Amelie Mauresmo, after both women overcame home-crowd favourites in the China Open today.

Davenport smashed Chinese hopes, overcoming spirited resistance from Zheng Jie before winning 6-2, 7-6 (7/4). For the second straight match, the 30-year-old American struggled, winning the opening set easily but losing an early break in the second. She finally triumphed despite losing her serve three times in the match. Zheng, ranked 33 and winner of titles in Estoril and Stockholm this season, was unable to take it into a third set as Davenport collected victory in a tiebreaker.

France’s top seed Mauresmo spoilt home country hopes with her elimination of Sun Tiantian 6-3, 6-2. Mauresmo has lost a dozen times to Davenport, her last win of only three coming in the 2000 Sydney final.

Serbian sixth seed Jelena Jankovic beat Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 6-2. Russian third seed Nadia Petrova moved into a quarter-final matchup with Jankovic as she crushed Greek Eleni Daniilidou 6-1, 6-2, firing 10 aces while saving all eight break points she faced.
