Murray bows out with injury
Hamburg, May 15:
Andy Murray retired with a right wrist injury on Tuesday while leading Filippo Volandri of Italy 5-1 in the first round at the Hamburg Masters.
The ninth-seeded Briton called for the trainer after dropping his racket in pain when hitting a forehand. He attempted to play on following treatment, but retired after two more points.
Volandri, who upset Roger Federer in Rome last week, lost the opening three games to love. He will next play Jose Acasuso of Argentina, who defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-4.
The 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya beat Mardy Fish 6-0, 6-3 to set up a meeting with 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.
Also, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland downed German wild card Tobias Summerer 6-1, 7-6 (5); Julien Benneteau of France beat Rainer Schuettler of Germany 7-6 (2), 6-2; and Spanish qualifier Oscar Hernandez defeated Benjamin Becker of Germany 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
On Monday, Marat Safin earned a torturous 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory over Nicolas Massu while Marcos Baghdatis slumped to his fourth opening-round defeat in five Masters events this year. The 14th-seeded Baghdatis lost to German wild card Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-3.
France’s Richard Gasquet beat Argentina’s Gaston Gaudio 6-1, 6-4. Ferrero withstood a strong challenge from Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-1, 7-6 (5), and another former No 1, Lleyton Hewittregistered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Agustin Calleri of Argentina.
Italian Open
ROME: Daniela Hantuchova rallied to beat French qualifier Aravane Rezai 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the Italian Open. Also, Ai Sugiyama beat Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 5-7, 7-5; Meghann Shaughnessy of the US ousted Emilie Loit 6-3, 6-2; and Michaella Krajicek beat Olga Poutchkova 6-1, 6-2.
In a matchup of the youngest and oldest players in the draw, 16-year-old Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek rallied past 34-year-old Nicole Pratt 6-7 (1), 6-0, 6-2.
The top eight seeded players have byes in the first round. Two-time Rome champion Amelie Mauresmo is top-seeded here.
