Myskina out of Sydney International

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina was knocked out of the Medibank Sydney International on Tuesday, losing 6-1, 6-3 to qualifier Peng Shuai of China in a second-round match. Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport eased into the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nathalie Dechy of France.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Alicia Molik beat Francesca Schiavone 7-6, 6-1. She will face Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals. Fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova beat Ludmila Cervanova 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova beat Silvija Talaja of Croatia 7-6, 6-2; seventh-seeded Patty Schnyder beat Croatia’s Karolina Sprem 5-7, 6-2, 6-3; and French Tatiana Golovin upset eighth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

In men’s play, top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt easily advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Karol Beck of Slovakia and second-seeded Carlos Moya went out to Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere, third-seeded Joachim Johansson beat Greg Rusedski 6-4, 6-3; No 8 Taylor Dent advanced with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Spain’s Santiago Ventura; and Michael Llodra defeated Xavier Malisse of Belgium 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Canberra Classic

CANBERRA:

Top-seeded Silvia Farina Elia beat Russia’s Tatiana Panova 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the $110,000 Canberra Classic, and Hungarian Aniko Kapros upset third-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2, 6-3. Farina Elia will play 19-year-old German Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the second round. No 2 Anna Smashnova of Israel and No 4 Marion Bartoli were the other seeded players advancing from the first round. Smashnova beat Arantxa Parra-Santonja of Spain 6-0, 6-0 and Bartoli had a 6-2, 6-0 win over French compatriot Stephanie Foretz.

Ukraine’s Yuliana Fedak beat No 6 Nicole Pratt of Australia 6-0, 6-3 and Evie Dominikovic ousted No 7 Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 6-3, 6-2 in first-round matches. Germany’s Marlene Weingartner beat No 8 Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-4, 6-3 in a second-round match.

HOBART: Second-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina rallied to beat Abigail Spears of the US 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a second-round match in the Moorilla International.

Third-seeded Iveta Benesova overcame fellow Czech Barbora Strycova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while another Czech, eighth-seeded Klara Koukalova, had a 6-1, 7-5 win over Marta Marrero of Spain.

Chinese qualifier Li Na had a 7-6, 6-0 win over Australia’s Casey Dellaqua. No 4 Shinobu Asagoe went down 6-2, 6-3 to China’s Zheng Jie; No 5 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain lost to Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic; and No 6 Maria Elena Camerin of Italy fell to Poland’s Marta Domachowska. In the evening match, 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova beat No 7 Dinara Safina of Russia 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

Defending champion Dominik Hrbaty reached the second round of the $426,000 Heineken Tennis Open when Rafael Nadal withdrew from their first round match with chest pains. Top-seeded Argentine Guillermo Coria progressed to the second round on a day when three seeded players and two defending champions were beaten.

Coria, ranked seventh, beat former champion Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-3. Juan Carlos Ferrero was beaten 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 by unheralded Czech qualifier Jan Hernych, Dutch qualifier Raemon Sluiter rallied from a set down to beat second-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, Luis Horna of Peru, seeded eighth, was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Olivier Rochu of Belgium. Former champion Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden was also beaten, 6-4, 6-0 by Ricardo Mello of Brazil. Robbie Ginepri of the US beat Agustin Calleri of Argentina 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, to set up a second-round meeting with Vince Spadea.
