Shikshya Napit of Bagmati Province and Sita Pathak of Tribhuvan Army Club won gold medals on the first day of the Bir Ganeshman Singh National Fencing Championship here at the NSC covered hall today.

Napit finished first in women's individual sabre.

She defeated Nepal APF Club's Urmila Lama 15-9 in final. Shuka Ghising of APF and Manisha Shrestha of TAC - who lost in semi-finals - claimed bronze medals.

Likewise, Pathak won gold medal in women's individual epee after she beat Januka Syangtan of APF 15-12 in the final match. APF's Anita Karki and Indira Poudel of TAC finished joint third.

A total of 114 players from six teams - four provinces and two departmental sides - are taking part in the championship organised jointly by Bir Ganeshman Singh Sports Committee and Nepal Fencing Association.

The championship offers a total of 12 gold medals in individual and team events of sabre, epee and foil categories.

Earlier, former Deputy Prime Minister and President of Bir Ganeshman Foundation, Prakashman Singh inaugurated the threeday championship. Nagarjun Municipality Mayor Mohan Basnet, Nepal Olympic Committee Vice-presidents Jyoti Rana and Ashok Ratna Bajracharya, NOC Secretary General Nilendra Raj Shrestha, and Secretary duo Ramji Bahadur Shrestha and Deepak Harsha Bajracharya were also present on the occasion.
