Nary opens with victory

KATHMANDU: Nary Thapa of Banke eased to a 21-11, 21-8 win over Sulochana Shrestha of Ilam in the women’s singles match of the sixth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Championships here on Tuesday.

Also winning the women’s singles first round matches were Sabita Paneru and Anita Ghimire. Likewise, Sachin Gurung, Prabin Basnet, Joseph Adhikari won the U-16 boys matches while Bindu Shrestha, Yalu Bhattarai and Nisha Thapa Magar won the U-16 girls matches on the inaugural day. The duo of Sujana Shrestha and Pooja Shrestha beaet Purna Sunwar and Gyanu Limbu 21-6, 21-14 in the women’s doubles match. Also winning in the same category were the pair of Kabita Karki/Tirna Rai, Tulasi Gurung/Purna Pun, Nary Thapa/Mary Thapa, Saraswoti Shrestha/Sara Devi Tamang and Mangala Devi Tamang/Sakuntala Nemwang. Ratna Rai/Sita Dahal and Sabina Panthi/Samjhana Khaling got walk over wins.

In the veterans’ double (above-45yrs), Upendra Pant and Pradeep Thapa beat Kaji Man Khapung and Gajendra Angdambe 17-21, 21-19, 21-15 while Devendra Subba and Hari Shrestha combined to beat Keshav Jung Karki and Sunil Khetan 21-16, 19-21, 21-19.

In all 614 players are vying for championships in the eight different categories.
