Nepal inch closer to securing ODI status after thrashing PNG in WCQ play-off
KATHMANDU: Nepal have registered a six-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in the play-off match of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday.
With this win, the fate of Nepal now rests on the ongoing match between Netherlands and Hong Kong. If Hong Kong fails to register a win against Netherlands, Nepal will obtain ODI status.
In the match played at the Old Hararians in Harare, Zimbabwe, Nepal won the toss and decided to field before bowling out PNG for 114 runs in 27.2 overs. In reply, Nepal reached to 115-4 in 23 overs.
Dipendra Singh Airee's all-round performance was crucial in Nepal's win as he hit a half-century and claimed four wickets for the wining side. Airee's 58-ball 50 runs included three sixes and one four. Earlier Nepal had made a poor start to the innings as they lost their openers Gyanendra Malla (1) and Anil Kumar Sah (9) cheaply.
Captain Paras Khadka who came to bat at third number tried to lay the foundation making 20 runns fcaing 18 deliveries where as Aarif Sheikh contributed 26 runs off 42 balls.
Norman Vanuna was pick of the PNG bowling as he claimed two wickets while Alei Nao and Charles Amini added one wicket each.
Meanwhile Amini was top-scorer for Amini with 19 runs where as Jason Kila (15) was another notable contributor for PNG.
Beside Airee, Sandeep Lamichhane was another Nepali bowler to bag four wickets in the match while Sompal Kami and Karan KC added one wicket each.
