Olympic selection on Friday

Kathmandu, May 27:

Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) is organising a selection tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics here on Friday.

As Arjun Basnet has already been selected for the Games, one berth is available in women’s section. Of the total six wild cards Nepal received for the Games, two went to athletics.

The best one among the participants in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 5,000m and 10,000m races will be selected for the Olympics. The NAAA will follow the IAAF Scoring Tables of Athletics to determine the scores of the athletes.

The NAAA will also select three junior athletes on the same day who will represent Nepal in the World Junior Athletics Champions and Asian Junior Athletics Championship, said NAAA general secretary Rabi Raj Rajkarnikar at a press meet today.

The tournament will also select one athlete (boy) for the World Junior Athletics Championships to be held in Poland from July 8-13. A boy and a girl will also be selected for the Asian Junior Athletics Championship slated for Jakarta from June 12-15, Rajkarnikar added.

Nepal are sending the seven-member team to the Olympics beginning on August 8. Deepak Bista qualified for the Games in taekwondo, while Nepal have received two wild cards each for Athletics and Swimming and one apiece in Judo and Shooting.
