Kathmandu, July 5

Royal Nepal Golf Club is organising the second edition of the Pepsi Open Golf Tournament under the sponsorship of Varun Beverages Nepal Pvt Ltd on Saturday.

Around 100 golfers will take part in the tournament that features five categories — men, women, junior, senior and super senior. The winners and runners-up in men, women and junior sections and the winners in other two categories will receive trophies and gift hampers, informed Kishan Agrawal, RNGC Tournament Committee Chairman.

“As this is an open tournament, we have more than 100 golfers from all the clubs of the valley. And we are organising the event in two shifts — morning and afternoon —to accommodate the players,” said Agrawal. The tournament will be played under stable ford ¾ handicap format.

Territory Marketing Head of Varun Beverages Nepal Pvt Ltd, Nishi Lama said they were looking forward to one of the best event in golfing fraternity. “We started this event with an aim of promoting the sport and golfers of the country,” said Lama. “ We have a contract with the RNGC until 2018 and if everything goes well we will be planning for a mega event,” added Lama.

RNGC President Rabindra Man Shrestha thanked the sponsors for their generous support in the development of golf in Nepal. “Pepsi Open is a social golf event for the members of the society and it has helped in the development of the sport.  RNGC is celebrating its centenary and events like this will be helpful in making it grand,” added Shrestha.

Agrawal, who is also the Treasurer of Nepal Golf Association, urged Varun Beverages to invest more for the development of amateur golf. “We have a professional golf circuit and there are many social golf events. What we need at the moment is an amateur tour with at least five tournaments. It will not only help in the development of golf but it also helps us in attracting the players into the sport,” added Agrawal.
