Policemen gun down Three Star, win trophy

KATHMANDU: Ju Manu Rai scored four goals as Nepal Police Club (NPC) inflicted the former national league champions Nabil Three Star Club their worst ever defeat during the Nepatop Kheladi Cup charity football tournament final at the Dasharath Stadium.

Midfielder Parbat Pandey added the other as the department team drubbed Three Star 5-1. Yugal Kishore Rai pulled one back in the dying moments.

The NPC marksman Ju Manu opened the scoring on a rebound in the 25th minute before adding the second two minutes into the first half injury time. The national team forward Ju Manu capitalised on a poor defensive marking by Three Star to score past goalkeeper Sanjeev Shrestha. Ju Manu completed his hat-trick through a penalty kick five minutes after the break. The NPC were awarded the spot kick after Three Star goalie Sanjeev brought down Chetan Ghimire inside the box.

Three Star’s misery was far from over as Ju Manu found the net again in the 56th minute. Ju Manu needed just a tap in after his teammate Yogesh Shrestha’s strike was rebounded off golie Sanjeev.

Then came a stunning goal from Parbat in the 68th minute. Pandey unleashed a poweful 25-yard shot and although Sanjeev reacted quickly, diving full-stretch to his right, he was unable to stop the ball. Yugal Kishore converted the spot kick in the 90th minute after Santosh Sahukhala was brought down in the danger zone.

Nepal National and International Players Association and Nepal Sports Journalists Forum jointly organised the event, under the sponsorship of Nepatop, to raise funds for former national volleyball player Dinesh Baniya’s treatment.
