Pun shatters three national records

Tara Devi Pun of Nepal Police Club shattered three national records in the women’s 75kg weight category during the first Inter-club Weightlifting Championship here today.
Pun lifted 68kg in snatch and 96kg in clean and jerk for the total of 164kg on her way to winning gold medal. She held the national records of 67kg, 95kg and 162kg set during the first Shalimar Open Weightlifting Championship held four years ago in Birgunj.
TAC lifters Usha Khadka (139) and Man Kumari Kumal (130) won silver and bronze respectively. In junior section, Jayanti Shrestha of Lakhe Physical Fitness won gold with a total lift of 90kg.
TAC lifter Pukar Gurung bettered his national record in snatch on his way to win gold medal in men’s above-105kg section. Gurung lifted 127 in snatch and 140kg in clean and jerk for a total of 276kg. He had lifted 126kg in the third FAJR Cup in Iran last year. Rajeev Maharjan of Bhrikuti was a distant second with 208kg, while Subash Upadhyay of Deep Jyoti came third with a total lift of 197kg.
In women’s 63kg section, TAC’s Manita Shrestha won gold with a total lift of 136kg, while her teammate Sarada Chaudhary was second with 130kg. In 69kg weight category, NPC’s Raj Laxmi Thapa came first with 150kg and her teammate Janaki Buda was second with 116kg. In junior section, Puja Kumal of Chitwan Physical Fitness won gold with a total lift of 70kg.
In women’s 90kg section, NPC lifter Laxmi Ban came first with 149kg and Dhangadhi Youth Club’s Jyoti Chaudhary was second with 100kg. Bidhya Rai of Nepal Byayam Mandir won junior section gold medal with a lift of 80kg.
Olympian and South Asian Games gold medallist Kamal Bahadur Adhikari of TAC won the men’s 69kg section gold medal with a total lift of 247kg. APF’s Mahesh Chaudhary came second with 199 and TAC’s Jeevan Tamang was third with 172kg. Prakash KC of Fitness and Order won junior section gold with a total lift of 225kg.
In 77kg section, NPC’s Bikash Thapa lifted 247kg to win gold medal beating his teammate Om Prakash Baishya (219) and TAC’s Yagya Bahadur Saru (213). Suraj Baishya of Fitness and Order won junior category gold medal with the total lift of 176kg.
In 85kg weight category, TAC’s Surendra Shrestha (226kg), his teammate Dinesh Karki (203) and APF’s Tilak Thapa (180) claimed top three positions, while Bishal Singh Bista (217) of Deep Jyoti came first in junior section.
Likewise, Gagan Chand (221kg) of NPC, Sujan BK (167) of APF and Arbind Gupta (160) of Om Fitness bagged top three positions in men’s 94kg weight category, while Jaya Deep Koju (184) of The Pemba Club won gold in junior section.
In 105kg weight category, Sandesh Gurung of NPC won gold medal with a total lift of 248kg, while Mohammed Aashik (200) of Birgunj United and TAC’s Binod Khadka (187) were second and third respectively. Sagar Bhandari of Deep Jyoti won junior section gold medal with a total lift of 203kg.
Meanwhile, NPC lifter Tara Devi Pun and TAC’s Pukar Gurung were declared the strongest lifters of the championship. Likewise, Kamal Bahadur Adhikari of TAC and Devi Kumari Chaudhary of NPC were named the best lifters in senior category, while Prakash KC and Sanju Chaudhary of Om Fitness were adjudged the best lifters in junior section. Also, Ram Kumar Yadav of Kharsal Youth Club and Karina Chaudhary of Galaxy Fitness were named the emerging lifters.
The two-day championship was organised by Kathmandu District Weightlifting Association under the sponsorship of Ashok Fitness Equipment and Health Track Fitness Equipment. National Sports Council Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista, Nepal Weightlifting Association President Ratan Kumar Tandon, General Secretary Parth Sarathi Sen Gupt, and President of Kathmandu District Weightlifting Association Bijendra Bikram Shah handed over prizes to the winners.
