Real upset

Tokyo, July 26:

An almost full-strength Real Madrid was upset 3-0 by Tokyo Verdy on the fourth match of its Asian soccer tour on Monday. Daigo Kobayashi put Verdy ahead in the sixth minute, and Brazilian striker Washington doubled the lead in the 27th. Takuya Yamada’s near-post header early in the second half put the result beyond doubt. The Spanish club’s unexpected loss came at the hands of a team which has conceded 26 goals in six games in the Japanese J-League. Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo attributed the shock defeat to fatigue. Real Madrid is set to play J-League’s Jubilo Iwata in Tokyo on Wednesday before wrapping up its tour with a friendly in Bangkok.
