Record-breaking McGrath puts Australia in command
Sydney, October 15:
Glenn McGrath picked off Brian Lara to set a new benchmark for Test pacemen, then spinners Shane Warne and Stuert MacGill combined to skittle the World XI on day two of the Super Test.
After taking the last four wickets in five overs to restrict Australia to 345 on Saturday morning, the World XI was bundled out for 190 in reply, conceding a 155-run first innings deficit.
Australia advanced to 66 for one at stumps in its second innings, an overall lead of 221. Matthew Hayden was unbeaten on 27 and Ricky Ponting was on 17. Opener Justmn Langer (22) was the only Australian wicket to fall in 20 overs on Saturday evening, edging Jacques Kallis’ fourth ball to slip.
The early overs were dominated by the fast bowlers from each side, before Warne (3-23) and MacGill (4-39) took seven wickets between them. Adam Gilchrist didn’t add to his overnight 94 before he was adjudged lbw on the second ball of the morning. Flintoff took 3-4 in a three-over spell and finished with 4-59. The Australian pacemen responded in kind. Brett Lee dismissed World XI captain Graeme Smith (12), then McGrath equalled Courtney Walsh’s Test record for fast bowlers (519 wickets) when he had India’s Rahul Dravid (0) caught behind.
McGrath took Test wicket No 520 when he trapped Lara (5) lbw to make the total 43-3. It continued a lean run for Lara, who netted only five runs in the limited-overs series. McGrath returned 2-34 and moved to third on the all-time Test bowling list, behind Australian teammate Warne (626) and Sri Lanka’s Muralitharan (565).
Virender Sehwag, who top-scored for the World XI with 76, belted 14 fours and dominated a 91-run partnership with Kallis that lifted the tourists to 134-3. Then Australia’s legspinners, working in tandem, took control.
Sehwag was out swiping at Warne, with Simon Katich holding a brilliant, reflex catch at short leg. MacGill had Inzamam-ul-Haq (1) stumped by Gilchrist next over and — after Warne removed Kallis (44) and Mark Boucher (0) — returned to take the last three wickets. The World XI innings unravelled after Flintoff, who scored 35 from 36 balls, attempted his third six in one over from MacGill and was caught at long-on by Lee.
