Roddick, Haas, Spadea win at SAP Open

Top-seeded Andy Roddick fought off a determined bid from fellow American Goldstein to advance to the second round of the SAP Open with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. In other match, German third-seeded Tommy Haas beat Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals. Vincent Spadea also advanced, beating fellow American James Blake 6-3, 6-0.
In first-round matches, Thomas Enqvist of Sweden upset American Mardy Fish, 7-6, 6-1 Max Mirnyi of Belarus advanced with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over Dutchman Peter Wessels.
French Cyril Saulnier beat Czech Jiri Novak 6-2, 6-2, and Belgian Xavier Malisse defeated Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 6-2, 6-3.

PARIS: Top seed Serena Willi-ams brushed aside Stephanie Cohen-Aloro of France 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals at the Open Gaz de France. Williams joined Silvia Farina Elia of Italy in the last eight. Farina Elia beat Virginie Razzano of France 6-4, 6-1. Also, Marion Bartoli of France advanced to the second round when Eleni Daniilidou of Greece retired while trailing 6-3, 2-0, and No 5 Nathalie Dechy of France overcame Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 7-5, 7-6 in another first-round clash. Sandra Mamic of Croatia replaced Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova after the Russian pulled out because of a respiratory illness.
