Sankata beat APF, claim Rhino Cup

CMG Club Sankata of Kathmandu won the title of the Rhino Gold Cup Football Tournament here today.

In the final match played at Kolhuwa grounds in Nawalparasi, Sankata defeated departmental side Nepal APF Club in sudden death. The match was decided on penalties after both the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 draw. The match then entered the sudden death after both teams converted four each spot kicks.

Sankata goalkeeper Binay Shrestha was the hero of the match saving the shot from APF’s Top Bista to ensure his team’s victory after Saroj Dahal had converted the seventh penalty kick.

After a goalless first half, Hari Karki put APF ahead in the 71st minute, while Martin Ajayi levelled the score for Sankata six minutes later. APF paid the heavy price of the missed penalty in the 22nd minute.

Champions Sankata received Rs 525,555 along with the trophy, while APF got Rs 250,555. Nirajan Khadka of Sankata was named the player of the tournament, while his teammate goalkeeper Shrestha was adjudged the man of the match and Bimal Rana of Deshbhakta Youth Club was the highest scorer. All three players received Rs 10,000 each.

A total of 10 teams took part in the tournament organised by Nandabhauju Madhyabarti Upabhokta Samiti.
