Santander hold Barcelona

London, April 10:

Ten-man Chelsea rallied from a goal down on Sunday to beat West Ham 4-1 in the English Premier League, and Manchester United stayed seven points behind with a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Liverpool kept up its chase for second place with a 1-0 win over Bolton, while Aston Villa drew 0-0 with West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle beat Middlesbrough 2-1.

Chelsea has 82 points with five games left, followed by Manchester United (75) and Liverpool (70). In the fight for fourth spot and the final Champions League qualification spot, Tottenham has 58 points, followed by Blackburn with 54 and Arsenal with 53.

Wayne Rooney scored for Manchester United in the 54th and set up Park Ji-sung for the second in the 78th.

At Anfield, Liverpool won its sixth successive game. Robbie Fowler scored his 11th goal in 12 matches against Bolton. He scored from 12 yards after getting a half-volleyed cross from Peter Crouch in first-half injury time.

Spanish La Liga

MADRID: Racing Santander held Spanish league leader FC Barcelona to a 2-2 draw on Sunday, despite first-half goals from Henrik Larsson and Samuel Eto’o.

Antonito Ramiro and Oscar Serrano scored before halftime for host Santander, while Barcelona captain Carles Puyol was ejected in injury time. Larsson gave Barcelona an 18th-minute lead when he finished a well-worked move involving Eto’o and Mark van Bommel. However, Antonito and Oscar were each able to hold off Barcelona defender Sergio “Rodri” Rodriguez to turn the tables within five minutes. Eto’o sidefooted to draw Barcelona level in the 33rd.

In other games, Achille Webo and Savo Milosevic scored to give fourth-place Osasuna a 2-1 win over Alaves, Sevilla drew 1-1 with Zaragoza, and Villarreal drew 1-1 with Deportivo La Coruna. Also on Sunday, it was: Espanyol 1, Atletico Madrid 1; and Athletic Bilbao 1, Mallorca 1.

Barcelona leads with 70 points, followed by Valencia and Real Madrid with 59. Osasuna has 58 points, with Sevilla on 52 and Celta 51.

Italian Serie A

ROME: Juventus saw their lead at the top of Serie A cut to seven points on Sunday after they were held to a 1-1 draw to Fiorentina and second-placed AC Milan thrashed Chievo 4-1.

Luca Toni put Fiorentina ahead, but Alessandro Del Piero’s left-footed strike salvaged a point for the weary title-holders. A point for Juve left them on 80 points, followed by AC Milan (73) and Inter Milan (70), with five games left to play.
