The Shirish Foundation, established by Olympian swimmer Shirish Gurung five years ago, signed boxer Susma Tamang as its second scholar for a year, here today.
Foundation Treasurer Sapana Gurung and boxer Tamang exchanged the memorandum of understanding amidst a programme.
As per the agreement, the Foundation will provide Tamang with boxing gears for her international participations along with Rs 15,000 per month. First scholar of the Foundation, wushuka Nima Gharti Magar handed over kits to Tamang.
The 20-year-old Tamang, who started playing boxing five years ago from Naxal Boxing Club, has already represented Nepal in three international tournaments.
Tamang, who won gold medal in the eighth National Games at age of 17 and was also named the best boxer of the tournament, participated in the U-19 World Championship in Poland in 2021 and took part in Kings Cup in Thailand and 2022 World Championship in Turkey this year. She was ranked sixth in the U-19 World Championship, while she finished fourth in Thailand.
Tamang thanked the Foundation for helping emerging players. "I am grateful to the Foundation for supporting an emerging player like me. It will help me grow and boost my morale in the days to come," said Tamang - who lives with her parents Sanu Tamang and Chandra Maya Tamang at the Nandi Ratri School in Naxal. She completed her high school education from Tangal High School and has not joined bachelor's programme to concentrate in the sport.
Tamang has been also selected for the Asian Games in China. Her elder sister, Kusum Tamang is also a boxer and she is the Second Lieutenant in Nepali Army.
Mentor of swimmer Gurung and General Secretary of Nepal Swimming Association, Jagat Man Shrestha hoped the support from the Foundation would be helpful for boxer Tamang. "This is not a big support but we hope it will be helpful for her. She is already a star and we want her to excel in future," he said.
