Signature Golf on Saturday

KATHMANDU: Gokarna Forest Golf Club is all set to host the intra-club tournament on Saturday to select six best golfers to participate in the Signature Club Golf Championship.

The six-member team of Gokarna will represent Nepal in the Eastern Region final which will be joined by eight other teams of India selected from Digboi, Bhubaneshwor and Guwahati clubs, said the organisers today. The Eastern Region final will be held at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) on December 8.

The Eastern Region champion team will then join the champion teams from Southern, Western and Northern Regions of India in the all-India final of the Signature Club Golf Championship 2009 at the Blue Canyon Golf Club in Phuket, Thailand on December 18.

Around 80 golfers will take part in the Gokarna intra-club tournament in three handicap categories — 0-8, 9-16 and 17-24 — to be played under the stableford point system. The organisers have also introduced the new format in this event — T20 of golf and Power play.

Like the Twenty20 cricket, the organisers decided to conduct the tournament over the nine holes. And like the T20 cricket, Power Play in the golf will provide golfers take risk and score more points.

For this the organisers will place two flags — white and black — in every hole. While the white flag is as normal as in regular round of golf, the black flags will be placed in difficult positions and the player making it to the black flag will earn double points to that of white flag. Under the rules, each player need to play at least three black flag from 1-8 holes and failing in doing so means automatic disqualification.
