KATHMANDU: Gokarna Golf Club is organising the Signature Golf Challenge 2009 on Saturday. United Spirits Nepal Pvt Ltd is the sponsor of the event.

Around 100 golfers from various clubs of Nepal are expected to take part in three categories — men, women and senior, said Deepak Acharya, Golf Director at the Gokarna Forest Resort at a press meet today. The one-day tournament will be played over 18 holes under the stableford 3/4 handicap format.

Apart from the winners and runners up in the three categories, the golfers can win the best gross, longest drive, closest to the pin and best sportsperson awards. General Manager of United Spirits Nepal Gautam Mullick said he was committed to the development of golf in Nepal.

“Signature has been sponsoring amateur golf tournament for the last few years and committed to sponsor minimum of two events from this year,” said Acharya. He also said the United Spirits and Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA) were in talks for the professional event. “Probably they will be sponsoring one pro event from next year,” added Acharya.

Pritam Purkayastha, Manager, Trade and Marketing, at the United Spirits and Saral Pradhan, Room Division Manager at Gokarna Resort were also present on the occasion.
