National Wushu player Bijay Sinjali has carved an inspiring journey in the sport, becoming one of Nepal's most prominent athletes in martial arts.
Starting as a junior champion, Sinjali's flexibility and skill in Wushu demonstrations made him a favorite among fans from an early age. Over the years, his dedication turned into a series of medals at the national and international levels.
Sinjali first gained major recognition at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) in 2016, winning a silver medal. But he didn't stop there. In the 13th SAG, hosted in Nepal, he fulfilled his dream by scoring 9.48 points in Taolu and winning gold.
His career highlight came last October when he created history by winning a bronze medal at the 3rd Taolu World Cup in Yokohama, Japan. Competing against athletes from six countries, including the USA, Mexico, and the UK, Sinjali secured a podium finish for Nepal. For this achievement, the government awarded him Rs. 65 lakhs, the highest prize for a Wushu athlete in Nepal.
Sinjali has also shined in other international competitions, winning bronze at the World Combat Championship in Riyadh and placing strongly in two international invitational championships in China. He currently represents the Tribhuvan Army Club in national competitions.
The 24-year-old athlete is now nominated in the People's Choice category of the NSJF Pulsar Sports Awards. "I've been performing on this stage for years, dreaming of this moment. Being nominated feels like a dream come true," he said.
Despite his success, Sinjali believes Wushu still lacks popularity compared to football or cricket in Nepal. "But this nomination will help bring attention to the sport," he added.
The People's Choice winner will be decided through votes; 50% via eSewa, 25% from Facebook, and 25% from sports journalists and head coaches.
Sinjali now stands among nominees like cricketer Gulshan Jha, football's Preeti Rai, kabaddi's Mammati Bista and rugby's Shriram Shrestha.
