Smith, Amla consolidate South African innings

Cape Town, January 3:

South African captain Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla shared an unbroken 130-run partnership to steer the Proteas to 144-1 on the second day of the third and final Test against India on Wednesday. India was dismissed for 414 before tea, which left South Africa 270 runs behind India with the series tied at 1-1.

Smith (76) hit 11 fours and a six in 111 balls. On 32, he reached 4,000 Test runs. Smith became more confident as his innings progressed in a series in which he’d previously totalled just 78 runs. Amla had six boundaries for 50 off 125 balls.

AB de Villiers (1) was the only South African batsman out. He edged to a ball from Sree Sreesanth and was caught by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Sreesanth had 1-36 off 11 overs.

Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar was out for 64 in the morning session to a ball from left-arm spinner Paul Harris that took an outside edge to give Jacques Kallis a simple catch at slip. The other batsman to go before lunch was VVS Laxman, who was bowled by Dale Steyn for 13.

Sourav Ganguly was subjected to a lot of short-pitched bowling and was hit on the helmet by Steyn on the third ball he faced. He still hit some of his trademark slashes through the covers, hitting nine boundaries and a six off 75 balls.

India looked in a powerful position at 350-5 at lunch, but Shaun Pollock and Harris combined to take the final five wickets. Virender Sehwag (40), who had dropped from opener to No 7, hit six fours and a six before he was caught by Makhaya Ntini from the bowling of Harris.

Anil Kumble (0) was out leg-before by Pollock. Harris then had Zaheer Khan (1) stumped by Mark Boucher. Pollock had Sreesanth (3) caught by Herschelle Gibbs and Ganguly (66), fooled by a slower delivery, caught by Hashim Amla at midoff to wrap up India’s innings.

South Africa’s best bowlers were Pollock, Steyn and Harris. Pollock finished with 4-75, Steyn had 2-58 off 27 overs and Harris 4-129 off 37.
