Spain champions

KATERINI: Spain were crowned European under-19 champions for the seventh time on Sunday after beating Russia 2-0 in the final played in the Greek town of Katerini. The teams had already met in the group stages, with Russia winning 3-1, but Spain gained their revenge with a clinical performance to take the title for the third time in the last five tournaments. Borja Mayoral put Spain ahead with a 39th minute header and they doubled their lead in the 78th when Matias Nahuel went one on one with Anton Mitryushkin.

Sydney sign Holosko

SYDNEY: Sydney FC have signed Slovakia forward Filip Holosko on a two-year deal. Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow on Monday confirmed Holosko would be joining the A-League club from Turkish giant Besiktas, where he played 144 games in eight seasons. The 31-year-old Holosko will move to Sydney next month. Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold says, “Filip is a multi-functional player who can play anywhere across the front line.” Dwight Yorke and Alessandro Del Piero have had playing stints at Sydney, who won the title in the inaugural season of the relaunched Australian league in 2005-06 and placed second last season.
