Sudden death

First-class aid

VIENNA: With the present heat, fans in Vienna could be forgiven for thinking they’re having hallucinations. Italy’s Susanne Zuber, a finalist in the 2002 Miss World contest, is one of the many paramedics mending cuts and bruises in the fan zone. A volunteer with the White Cross in her native Trentino-Alto Adige province of northern Italy, the football fan said she was “enjoying a great new adventure.” — AP

Beware of the fans

VIENNA: Being a journalist is a dangerous job, and not just in war zones. A photographer found out for himself, Friday in Vienna’s city centre, when a group of Croatian fans, desperate to make it to the evening’s Croatia vs Turkey match, spotted his Euro 2008 accreditation and pounced. The photographer escaped, and crucially, held on to his precious tournament pass. — AP

Sponsored doping

BASEL: Forced to watch his side’s quarter-final against Portugal from the stands on Thursday following a one-match pitch-side ban, Germany coach Joachim Loew said UEFA provided him with drinks, aspirin and even Baldrian, a sleeping pill and muscle relaxer. “That surprised me a litte,” was his only comment. — AP
