The Surya Nepal Eastern Open is beginning at the Dharan Golf Club on Tuesday.

Around 50 golfers are expected to take part in the second event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2022-23, informed the organisers at a press meet today. The 54-hole tournament carries a cash purse of Rs 800,000.

"We are expecting a fierce competition in Dharan, where seven local pros are taking part in the event," said Nepal PGA General Secretary Deepak Acharya. Nepal No 1 Sukra Bahadur Rai, Mani Rai and former winner and Teaching pro in Germany, Sabin Sapkota are expected to put up a strong show. Winner of the season's first event and former No 1 pro Bhuwan Nagarkoti, Sanjay Lama, Dhana Thapa and Jayaram Shrestha are among top contenders from Kathmandu.

Out of the total cash purse, top three pros will receive Rs 140,000, Rs 90,000 and Rs 67,000 respectively. Cut will be applied after the second round with top 21 pros and at least six amateurs making it to the final round of the tournament. The tournament will conclude with the Pro-Am event on December 30.

Nepal PGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha thanked the sponsors, Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd for their relentless support to professional golf.

"We are grateful to our sponsors Surya Nepal for making the Tour happen for a long time," he said. "We have a strong field and are hoping for really low scores, may be a record winning total like in the first event of the Tour," he added.
