• Norbu Tshiring Sherpa claims corporate event crown • Abhimanyu Karki bags junior title

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 29

Top Nepali golfer Subash Tamang won the title of the Nepal Tourism Amateur Golf Championship here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Tamang carded three-under 69 in the third and final round to post the 54-hole total of 10-under 208. He recorded a 13-stroke victory over Tashi Tshiring, who played one-over 73 to finish as runner-up with the score of three-over 219.

The 13th South Asian Games double gold medallist, Tamang became the lone player to post under-par scores in all three rounds and receive the best gross awards. Wangchen Dhondup came third at five-over 221 after carded even-par 72 in the final round, while Qatar national team member Selah Ali Lakaabi slipped to fourth at eight-over 224 after he faltered to six-over 78. Sadbhav Acharya shot fiveover 77 to finish fifth at nineover 226.

In women's section, Kashmira Shah won the title with the score of 24-over 240. Shah, who had posted nine-over 153 in the first two rounds, faltered to 15-over 87 on the final day. Sushma Sigdel (95) came second at 45-over 261, while Bangladesh's Sonia Akter (85) was third at 47-over 263. Ringkee Akther (91) of Bangladesh came fourth with the total score of 51-over 267, while Prativa Rai (95) finished fifth at 52-over 268, she played a round of 23-over 95 today.While Shah won best gross awards on the first two days, while Bangladesh's Sonia Akter bagged the award in the final round.

On Wednesday, Nepal 'A' team of Subash Tamang and Sadbhav Acharya won the team event title with the 36- hole score of three-under 285.Nepal 'B' team of Tashi Tshiring and Wangchen Dhondup finished second at 295, while Gandaki Province team of Ajit BK and Suresh Tamang came third at 22-over 310, finishing one stroke ahead of Bangladesh's Liton Mondol and Mehedi Hasan.

In women's section, Nepal team of Kashmira Shah and Sushma Sigdel won the title with the total score of 31-over 319, while Bagmati Province team of Prativa Rai and Tara Karki Chitrakar was second at 65-over 353. Bangladesh team of Sonia Akter and Ringkee Akhter came third with the score of 66-over 354.

Meanwhile, Norbu Tshiring Sherpa won the corporate tournament. Played under stableford 3/4 handicap format, Sherpa accumulated 39 points to win the trophy.Dhundul Namgyal finished second with 35 points.

Aaiesteen Tandan won the women's category title, while Arsiya Banu finished second.Brig Gen Suresh Baniya bagged the senior section trophy, finishing ahead of MB Raut, while Abhimanyu Karki won the junior section title.Saleh Ali Lakaabi of Qatar and Dr Mukesh Joshi claimed the longest drive and closest-tothe-pin awards respectively.

A total of 106 golfers - 34 in the main tournament and 72 in corporate event - took part in the championship organised by the Nepal Golf Association under the auspices of Nepal Tourism Board and National Sports Council. The event was also supported by Gokarna Forest Golf Resort, Royal Singi Hotel, R&A, IMS, Kelme, Gorkha Brewery, Yarchagumba whisky and Nepal Airlines Corporation.

Minister for Youth and Sports Maheshwor Jung Gahatraj, Qatar Ambassador to Nepal Yusuf Bin Mohammed Al- Hail, NGA President Tashi Ghale, Vice-president Tilak Rai and President of Gokarna Golf Club Suhrid Ghimire handed over the prizes to the winners of the tournament.
