NOC Volleyball

KATHMANDU: National Open College is organising the Valley wide Inter-school Volleyball Tournament from Saturday to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In all, 30 team — 20 in boys’ and 10 in girls’ section — are expected to take part in the 10-day tournament, said the organisers at a press meet. Apart from the winner’s trophy and cash prizes, the organisers will also award five individual prizes — best player, blocker, attacker, setter and defender. Director of NOC Prof Dr Achut Mani Acha-rya, principal Sheetal Kumar Karki, and technical chief Hukum Raj Giri were present on the occasion. — HNS

Henin jumps to 7th

MIAMI: Belgium’s Justine Henin-Hardenne jumped five places to seventh in the WTA rankings, after her victory over France’s Mary Pierce in the French Open final. Pierce made the biggest improvement leaping to 13th from 23rd. American Lindsay Davenport remained atop stretching her margin over Maria Sharapova of Russia from 91 to 261 points. — AFP

Ajax sign Rosenberg

AMSTERDAM: Ajax has signed Sweden’s Markus Rosenberg from Malmo FF to a four-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released, but Dutch media reported the transfer fee was $6.1 million. Rosenberg led the Swedish league in scoring last season with 14 goals. He was expected to arrive at Ajax on July 4. — AP
