Athletics meet today

KATHMANDU: Nepal Amateur Veterans Athlete Committee is organising the second Open Veterans Athletics Championship and the first Inter-school Athletics Competition on May 20 and 21 at Dasharath Stadium. In veterans’ section, the competition will be held in 40 categories among five age groups and in inter-school competition, there will be eight events held in boys’ and girls’ sections, said the organisers. — HNS

Swarnim School win

LALITPUR: Arjun Ghale and Rikesh Shrestha netted eight points each as Swarnim School defeated Triyog School 23-14 in the boys’ section of the Rato Bangala Junior Invitational School Basketball Tournament on Thursday. The match, however, was meaningless as Swarnim had already entered the semi-finals as leaders from Group A, while Triyog were already out of the tournament. — HNS

Oldest FA Cup sold

LONDON: The oldest surviving FA Cup was sold at auction for $879,400, a record price for a piece of soccer memorabilia. Made in 1896 as a replacement for the stolen original, the cup was bought by an unidentified telephone bidder in the auction in London. The price topped the previous record set in 1997 when a copy of the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy was sold for $467,500. — AP

BCCI look for coach

NEW DELHI: Cricket authorities began interviewing four contenders, including Australians Greg Chappell and Tom Moody, for the post of coach of the Indian team. Mohinder Amarnath, a star of India’s lone World Cup triumph in 1983, was the first to make his presentation before the six-man selection committee. The fourth cricketer shortlisted is former West Indies opener Desmond Haynes. India is looking for a replacement for John Wright, who returned home last month after serving five years. — AP
