Els wins BMW Asian Open

SHANGHAI: Ernie Els won the BMW Asian Open, finishing off a 13-stroke victory with a 7-under 65. The South African star, a three-time winner this year on the PGA European Tour, had a 26-under 262 total in the event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour. England’s Simon Wakefield (73) finished second at 13 under. Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn (72) was third at 12 under, New Zealand’s Eddie Lee (72) and France’s Jean-Francois Lucquin (73) tied for fourth at 10 under. — AP

Wayne Rooney dropped

LONDON: England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been dropped from a school soccer promotion because of his bad on-field behavior. The English Schools Football Association said Rooney would not appear as a star guest at an Under 13s semi-final for the Coca-Cola Cup at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium next Monday. The 19-year-old Rooney has often been shown swearing repeatedly at referees during televised matches. — AP

Ahmed, Khan join squad

ISLAMABAD: Fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed and Bazid Khan returned to Pakistan’s cricket team for this month’s series against the West Indies. Ahmed has recovered from his knee operation and will be back in action after remaining on the sidelines for a year. Khan has played two ODIs in which he disappointed against minnows Zimbabwe at home last year by scoring just 12 runs. Shoaib Akhtar (groin problem) and Mohammad Sami (heel injury) failed to recover and were not considered for two Tests and three ODIs against the West Indies. — AP

Petrovic wins golf title

AVONDALE: Tim Petrovic completed the journey from pizza deliveryman to US PGA Tour winner on Sunday, holing a 4-foot par putt to beat rookie James Driscoll on the first hole of a playoff in the Zurich Classic. Petrovic, 38, set up the breakthrough victory with a 19-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation, then finished off Driscoll with a routine par on the par-5 closing hole on the year-old TPC of Louisiana. India’s Arjun Atwal finished fifth. Vijay Singh, the 2004 winner at English Turn, closed with a 72 to tie for 21st at 5under 283. — AP
