Acharya finishes first

KATHMANDU: Anjali Acharya beat Dolma Lama in the girls’ 20-25kg weight category of the second National Junior ITF Taekwondo Championship, which concluded today. Others who claimed the top two spots were Puja Giri and Anuka Dhakal (25-30kg); Rabi Thapa and Sunil Basnet (25-30kg); Suraj KC and Rinzi Sherpa (31-35kg); Pujan KC and Ritij Puri (36-40kg). Bagmati zone finished first in the team championship of the event, organised by Dhapasi dojang. — HNS

Buddhist Bal Griha win

Lalitpur: Sudeep Acharya scored the only goal as Buddhist Bal Griha defeated Garuda Sports Club ‘B’ to win the fifth Under-14 Garuda Football Cup here at JYC ground today. The tournament was jointly organised by Garuda Sports Club and Base Camp Foundation for underpriviledged children. Association for Abandoned Children won the Fair Play award. National football coach Dhruba KC gave away prizes to the winners of the 20-team tournament. — HNS

National Karate C’ship

KATHMANDU: The Baneshwor branch dojo of Nepal Kyokushin Karate Association is organising the second Open National Full Contact Karate Championship from March 11-12 at Tara Cinema Hall. In all, 125 athletes — 100 men and 25 women — will take part in the event, said the organisers. — HNS

SL ratify J’suriya contract

COLOMBO: Opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya will make his English County Championship debut next month after the Sri Lankan cricket board ratified his contract with Somerset. England and Wales Cricket Board has announced that Jayasuriya has signed a contract with Somerset as a replac-ement for Australian captain Ricky Ponting who could not confirm his availability. — AP
