Birendra Shield ends
DOLAKHA: The Birendra Shield Inter-school Sports meet organised after a gap of 12 years concluded here on Sunday. In the competition, Hanumanteswar Higher Secondary School, Kavre, Betyaswar Secondary School, Namdu and Rising Star Residential Secondary School, Namdu and Rising Star School, Charikot finished with equal points to jointly grab the first position. As a result, all the four schools will keep the shield for a period of three months each. — RSS
Camacho ‘Real’ favourite
MADRID: Benfica’s Jose Antonio Camacho has emerged as front-runner to replace Carlos Queiroz as Real Madrid’s coach. Camacho hinted during a visit to the Spanish capital that he would be interested in taking over from Queiroz, who is expected to be dismissed. Camacho, a former international defender who played for Madrid for 16 years, had a three-week spell in charge of the team in the summer of 1998 but left after a dispute with officials. — AP
Viduka ruled out
SYDNEY: Striker Mark Viduka, who will miss his last two Premier League matches with Leeds United due to injury, will also not play for Australia in two matches against Turkey. After suffering hamstring and back injuries, Viduka missed Saturday’s 3-3 draw between Leeds and Charlton in England. Australian coach Frank Farina, who will announce the squad for the Turkey series on Wednesday, said that Viduka was still likely to travel to Australia. — AP
Australia to host qualifier
MELBOURNE: Tennis Australia announced that Australia’s Davis Cup World Group qualifier against Morocco will be held on grass at Royal Kings Park in the western city of Perth in September. Australia, which lost to Sweden in the first round this year in Adelaide after winning the Cup last year, will need to beat Morocco from September 24-26 to stay in the World Cup for 2005. Last December in Melbourne, Australia beat Spain on a portable grass court at Rod Laver Arena to win the title. — AP
Italians win three golds
MADRID: Emiliano Brembilla of Italy won the 400-metre freestyle title at the European swimming championships for the fourth time, claiming the first of three gold medals for his country. Tania Cagnotto also won gold, taking the women’s 10-metre diving event, while Italy won the men’s 400m relay at Madrid’s M-86 complex. Also on Monday, world record holder Yana Klochkova of Ukraine won her fourth consecutive gold medal in the 400m women’s medley. — AP
Orvar Bergmark dead
STOCKHOLM: Orvar Bergmark, 73, a defender on Sweden’s runner-up team in the 1958 World Cup in Stockholm, has died from Parkinson’s disease. He was diagnosed with the illness in 1974. In 1958, Bergmark was voted player of year by the Swedish Football Association. Bergmark played his 94th and final international match against Cyprus in 1965, having ended his club career a year earlier in Italy with AS Roma. He also coached Sweden’s national team between 1966 and 1970, and was inducted into Swedish football’s Hall of Fame in 2003. — AP
