Janasewa School triumph

KATHMANDU: Janasewa School defeated Bagh Bhairab School 4-1 in the final of the Martyrs’ Memorial Cup 2061 football tournament today. Sabindra Maharjan scored two goals, while Devendra Maharjan netted one and the other came through the courtesy of Saju Maharjan. Kathmandu mayor Keshav Sthapit gave away prizes. Hill Town School recieved the Fair Play Trophy while John Maharjan of Bagh Bhairav won the higherst scorers’ award. Jonas Maharjan of Bagh Bhairav and Sabindra Maharjan of Jana Sewa were named the best players. — HNS

Mauresmo wins in Berlin

BERLIN: Venus Williams pulled out of the German Open final on Sunday because of an ankle injury, delivering the title to Amelie Mauresmo. The injury could threaten Williams’ chances of playing the French Open. Venus twisted her left ankle against Croatian Karolina Sprem in Saturday’s semi-final. The third-rnked Mauresmo expressed disappointment at the way she picked up her 11th career title. — AP

Murali-mania grips Lanka

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister led millions of fans to congratulate Muttiah Muralitharan for breaking the world record for Test wickets. President Chandrika Kumaratunga said she was impressed by Muralitharan’s courage and determination in facing challenges and adversaries. “I join all Sri Lankans in expressing our pride and delight that you are the first Sri Lankan to establish a world record in Test cricket,” Kumaratunga said in a message sent to Muralitharan, who smashed through Courtney Walsh’s record of 519 victims. — AFP
