Singh wins COAS Cup

KATHMANDU: Ramdhar Singh won the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Cup Golf Tournament here at the Tribhuvan Army Officer’s Golf Club on Saturday. Jamling Ghale finished second, while Gajendra Bahadur Limbu came third. Limbu also won the most birdies award. Rabindra Man Shrestha was the guest winner, while Chitra Bahadur Gurung won the senior section award. Other winners were Pawan Bahadur Pande (best sportsmanship), Victory SJB Rana (closest to the pin at Hole No 4), Bikramaditya Rana (closest to the pin at Hole No 17), Mahesh Bikram Karki (longest drive at Hole No 18) and Gunja Man Lama (club championship). COAS Rookmangud Katawal gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS

Ozat retires

COLOGNE: Turkey defender Umit Ozat announced his retirement on Saturday, seven months after collapsing during a Bundesliga match for his club Cologne with an inflammation of the heart. “I believe in destiny, my career is finished, but thanks to God, I am still alive,” said the emotional 32-year-old during a press conference. The Cologne captain collapsed unconscious during a German league game on August 29 against Karlsruhe. Ozat, who won 41 caps for Turkey, was part of the team which finished third at the 2002 World Cup having played most of his football for Turkish giants Fenerbache. — AFP
